The Firm
March 2005
In his foreword, Glassey says that after a career "having fun" working for large actuarial, accounting and legal practices, he began to "question the assumption that more is always better."
Immediately the alarm bells rang... Who has "fun" working for a large corporate firm? However, Glassey's warm and reassuring writing style is very quick to reassure even the most cynical of reader that what will follow is simple, yet potentially life changing, advice.
To that point, the book's first chapter opens with the statement, "the material contained within these pages has the potential to change your life forever." A bold statement, perhaps... but one that might well be justifiable.
The seven clear chapters, each of which are interspersed with inspiring quotes, advice and case studies, set out a series of questions on lifestyle as well as finance.
But the book also has a number of quirky additions, including pages for "Notes and Doodles."
The information is presented clearly, and there is no clutter. At all. A helpful glossary of terms to help even the layest-of-laymen understand the advice and coaching detailed throughout the book can be found at the back. But that's if you need it at all.
The book's author, Duncan Glassey is the founding principal of the Wealthflow Partnership, based in Edinburgh. He specialises in holistic personal finance coaching, and his emphasis, in the book, is very much on life-planning.
The only thing that may put any potential readers off this book is the title. Perhaps a tad daunting compared to the free-flowing, easy to read and digest, information and advice contained within its pages.
There are personal touches throughout the book, and readers might easily find themselves reading it through, page for page, from Preface, to Resources.
And, talking of resources, a useful list of websites, contacts and further reading, is helpfully provided at the back - nothing too daunting though, again - which also lends to the personal feel of the book.
I might keep a hold of this one.
